Class elections

After going through the presidential election process yesterday and today with my students, I decided that the best way for them to really understand the process is to take part in it.  Consequently, today after finishing up talking about Inauguration Day, I gave students an issue that they needed to take a stand on (taken from the state writing test for fifth graders this last March): Should school start early and end early, or start late and end late?  They had to choose which side and then as they declared their stand as an "early" or "late" person, I wrote out a voter registration card for all of them.  In the next few days they will be meeting to decide on a candidate (caucus and primary), campaigning, and voting.  It should be an interesting time and will hopefully help them to understand what is happening right now with the gubernatorial election, the presidential election, senators, congressmen, etc. up for election.
