We walked about a mile and we came to a barbed wire fence and thought all hope was lost. But then we saw a sign that said, "Close Gate When You Go Through." Hayden and Duncan found a way to open the gate and we all went through it and continued to walk and walk and walk and walk. We stopped under a tree to enjoy the shade and eat some food to replenish our energy. While we were waiting, several of the students came up with ideas for games, such as "Hunger Games" to decide who was the hungriest.
During the break, Mrs. Knudsen called the school and talked with Mrs. Diamond who immediately left the school with Mrs. Stoddard to come rescue us. Mrs. Hanks went out into the road with her GPS on her phone and figured out we were only about a mile and a quarter from the bus site. In order to keep our spirits up to keep walking, some students started counting all the litter on the side of the road, especially the cans. About a mile into our walk, we stopped again, this time on the side of the road to recuperate. Many of the students laid on their jackets and thought that sucking on rocks would quench their thirst (until Mrs. Knudsen pointed out the unsanitary-ness of doing so). Mrs. Christensen ran ahead and saw that the road leading to the bus site was just at the bottom of the hill, so we started out again.
Several cars and trucks drove by us and in response to the honking signal from the students, the cars and trucks honked at us. Barely into the campsite we paused again on the side of the road to enjoy the shade and make sure we were really where we needed to be. As we were nearing the end of our journey, we knew we were there when heard the bus honk and everyone started running towards the bus.
Unfortunately we had to leave right then so we couldn't eat the school sack lunches until we came back to the school. We guess that we walked between four to five miles in all. (Pictures to be coming)
Things we learned on our adventure:
- Never follow tracks you don't know.
- The bathrooms stink.
- Sometimes you have to share your food with other people, even when you're really hungry.
- Sometimes you get really thirsty on a hike.
- Bring a water bottle.
- There are lots of different and interesting kinds of plants.
- If we get lost we can always get found or find our own way.
- We can walk farther than we thought we could.
- If you're first then you can take a break, but if you're in the back you don't get as much of a break.
- When you're lost always look for the road.
- Just don't get lost.
- Have a partner if you do get lost.
- Get a map and look for a map if you don't have one.
- Always stick with others.
