I had the opportunity yesterday (and a little bit today) to sit down with all of my students and have them read to me for their beginning of year benchmark for reading. I was very pleased at the effort that every student made during this time--everyone tried and everyone did very well. I can tell that they take reading seriously which is so important to me.
As I told my students last week, after elementary school they will probably never have a teacher sit down with them to help them learn to become a better reader ever again. They'll just be given assignments and be expected to do the reading and answer the questions. As a result, there have been some students at other schools, at different times, that have left elementary school having faked their way through, who don't really know how to read, and who end up graduating high school without knowing how to read. I don't want that to happen to ANY of my students. Thankfully, all of them can read--in large part due to the help and assistance parents give at home.
I want all of my students and all of their parents to know that I will do all I can at school to help your children be better readers. Please make sure they are reading every night for at least 30 minutes. It really does make a difference.
